Massachusetts Investor Club

Activating Full Spectrum Capital for Massachusetts.

Massachusetts Investor Club

Hosts: Impact Finance Center and Gilson Family Foundation

When: Tuesday, October 25, 1pm EST/ 11am MT

Location: Online

In partnership with Gilson Family Foundation, Impact Finance Center is hosting the Massachusetts Investor Club to build the infrastructure to get more investment capital flowing to support the impact sector in Massachusetts. We have created the Massachusetts Investor Club to act as a marketplace to directly connect investors with the projects they care about.

The Gilson Family Foundation is a family foundation located in Marblehead, Massachusetts. The Gilson Family Foundation is interested in connecting with Massachusetts impact investors, leaders, community leaders, and investment opportunities as they expand their Massachusetts strategy. The Gilson Family Foundation trustees have actively been training with Impact Finance Center through our Fellowship Program, participated in CO Impact Days, and started making direct investments such as a program-related investment into Rocky Mountain MicroFinance Institute and asked Impact Finance Center if we would be interested in partnering to expand the work we have done in Colorado to Massachusetts with a focus on Education, Health, and Human Services.

Nonprofit organizations need patient flexible capital to invest in building their capacity. It can be hard to find this type of capital from grant funding alone, which is often restricted for certain programs. When appropriately structured, investments in nonprofits can bring benefits both for the nonprofit organization as well as for funders and investors. Nonprofits with earned revenue streams can take on debt to invest in growth, paying back investors over time with a modest interest rate. For funders, the return of capital plus a small amount of interest has the potential to be more impactful than a grant because the money can be reinvested or granted out at the end of the loan term.

Join the Massachusetts Investor Club to learn how you can invest in the businesses and organizations that are working to make a difference for Massachusetts. In this presentation, impact investors will share their stories, the audience will hear discussions about the need of projects and social ventures in your community, and finish by hearing some quick pitches from other Massachusetts-based organizations. You will have the opportunity to ask questions from leaders in the field, as well as gain access to live deals so that you can begin activating capital right away.

Objective: We will host quarterly meetings with the goal of growing the Club to 100+ investors (e.g., individuals, private foundations, community foundations, endowments, family offices, corporations, banks, and life insurance companies) by 2022.

Investor Club Description: As we work to build the infrastructure for community members to be able to invest directly in social ventures (i.e. projects, nonprofits, small businesses, startups, cooperatives, tandem-hybrids, and funds) they care about, Investor Clubs are a critical step forward. Building on the success of CO Impact Days and our growing network of Impact Investing Giving Circles (we piloted the first-ever Impact Investing Giving Circle in partnership with the Women’s Foundation of Colorado), Investor Clubs are the next step in achieving Impact Finance Center’s vision of a Main Street 2.0.

After this pilot Investor Club meeting, we will evaluate if there are sufficient investment opportunities and investor interest to convene a quarterly Massachusetts Investor Club with the goal of growing the Club to 100 investors (e.g., individuals, private foundations, community foundations, endowments, family offices, corporations, banks, and life insurance companies) by 2025.
